Can you call them Porcelain Palaces any more? All over town, the iconic shiny white glazed tiles are gradually being replaced with a creamier hue, and more rough stone surfaces, as you can see up close at the corner of Seventh St. and Broadway–the White Castle that bestrides Downtown and the West End, closed for several months for its turn at refreshening, has opened again.
The new building has almost 3000 square feet and room for 53 people in its dining room. The store is the fourth iteration at the site, which is across the street from the first White Castle which opened in 1927. The current site has been serving little burgers by the bagful for about 50 years, and the upgrade promises more decades to come.
