Downtown Mussel & Burger Bar opens for lunch today

The closing of St. Charles Exchange happened quickly, but the conversion of that classy space into the newest addition to Fernando Martinez’s restaurant empire happened even more quickly. Martinez to open next M&BB in former St. Charles Exchange spot

As soon as word circulated that St. Charles Exchange, 113 S. Seventh St., was folding, speculation began about how that prime downtown space would be used next. F&D has gotten word that Fernando Martinez has signed a lease and will open a downtown iteration of his very popular Mussel & Burger Bar as soon as he can make the minor renovations. Yes, it’s March. So that means Fernando Martinez has more restaurants in the works

The indefatigable Martinez family–Fernando, Christina and Yaniel–have announced plans to open two more restaurants. Artesano Tapas y Vino will be in the Westport Village location briefly occupied by A.P. Crafters, which closed in 2013. The second will be a downtown iteration of Mussel & Burger Bar. Nine chefs get smokin’ hot for Home of the Innocents

Saturday, Sept. 6, from 4:30-8:30 p.m., six Louisville restaurant chefs will put on their grilling aprons to create a Backyard BBQ dinner to benefit Home of the Innocents.

The 9th annual fund-raiser will be led this year by Brown Hotel executive chef Josh Bennis, who will be joined at the barbecue pits and grills by Shawn Ward of The Brewery, Fernando Martinez of Mussel and Burger Bar (among other restaurants), Dean Corbett of Corbett’s, Equus and Jack’s Lounge, Troy Schuster formerly of 211 Clover Lane, Tavis Rockwell of Louvino, Ming Pu of River City Winery, Matt Durham of the Seelbach Hotel, and Nancy Russman, chef, cooking instructor and author of “Kids’ Club Cookbook.” Continue reading Nine chefs get smokin’ hot for Home of the Innocents

Fernando Martinez — of Guaca Mole and Mussels & Burgers Bar — to add third restaurant, The Place Downstairs, in January.

Fernando, Christina and Yaniel Martinez plan to open their third restaurant in less than three years in January 2014. The informal but higher-end restaurant will be dubbed The Place Downstairs, signifying its location in the basement of Mussel & Burger Bar, their always busy American bistro in Jeffersontown.
