Time to plan for special dinners

Two special dinners this week highlight the range of local chefs’ interests and ambitions. Thursday, Nov. 2, Varanese, 2106 Frankfort Ave., will host its second annual Pork and Pinot dinner, pairing wines from around the world made from the pinot noir grape and dishes made with the multifarious possibilities of the meat from happy hogs. Sunday, Nov. 5, Sullivan University’s A Tale of Five Courses pop-up dinner organized by Chef James Moran pays tribute to Creole-Cajun cuisine, the dishes that inspired him to pursue his culinary degree. We live in a microwave world where most people expect to get what they want immediately. But Chef John Varanese is proof that a little delayed gratification can be just as sweet. Varanese fell in love 15 years ago, not with a person but with a location. It took 15 years for him to get what he wanted, but in March the River House Restaurant and Raw Bar opened on the very spot that Varanese had coveted. Plenty of special dinners; all worth a look

The next week or so will see several restaurants offering special dinners, focused on Bourbon and wine. All will offer multi-course meals paired with alcoholic beverages. The menus will show off each chef’s talents and interests that extend beyond the regular menus, each will offer cocktails or wines, chosen in collaboration with chefs and beverages specialists, paired with the dishes, and each will boast an expert guest to comment on the choices for the pairings. The result is an entertaining dinner, out-of-the-ordinary food and new wine or whiskey knowledge to bandy about. And all for a very reasonable cost, considering all that you get. Are you set for Valentine’s Day dining?

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year makes dining out with one’s honey becomes a bit more flexible. Restaurants that do not usually open on Sundays will for this special dining day. And since Saturday is a better date night, restaurants are extending their special dinners into Feb. 13, and even into Friday. Varanese’s “Billy’s Burger Bash” to pay tribute to Lamont Gillispie

For the 29th year Billy Rapaport, who has been NBC-TV’s freelance field producer of Derby coverage, will host his late night Derby Night  Burger Bash. For the 8th year, Varanese, will be the venue for the raucous party the packs the house at 2106 Frankfort Ave., starting at 11 p.m. Anyone who has energy left after a long day of celebrating the 141th running of the Kentucky Derby is welcome to join in the festivities.
